Electrical emergencies can be terrifying. Whether you've heard a loud "pop" from a plug socket or the lights have completely failed on a dark, wet winter evening in Cornwall, knowing how to react is crucial for keeping your home safe.

1. Identify the Danger and Do Not Touch It

First and foremost, your physical safety is the priority. If an appliance is sparking, an outlet is smoking, or you detect a distinct fishy/burning plastic smell, do not touch the affected area or try to unplug anything. Water and electricity are a deadly mix, so if the emergency is related to a burst pipe leaking onto electrics, step away immediately.

2. Isolate the Power at the Consumer Unit

If it is safe to do so, locate your home's consumer unit (fuse box). In modern Penzance homes, this is often housed near the front door or in a utility cupboard.

  • Flip the main switch to the 'OFF' position. This effectively cuts power to your entire house, neutralizing the immediate risk of electric shock or fire.
  • If you only suspect an isolated circuit (like an upstairs lighting ring), you can flip the specific Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB) down, though turning off the main switch is safest if you are unsure.

3. Never Use Water on an Electrical Fire

If flames have broken out from an electrical socket, never throw water on it. You will likely suffer a severe electric shock. If you have an appropriate CO2 or dry powder fire extinguisher, you can attempt to put out small flames. Otherwise, evacuate the property immediately and call 999.

4. Call an Emergency Electrician

Once the power is off and you are safe, do not attempt a DIY fix. You need a fast, local expert who understands fault finding and domestic wiring repairs. Elliot Electrical acts rapidly across West Cornwall to identify the core issue, make your systems safe, and restore your power with minimum distress.
